The old village of Mojácar rising white across the hillside, seen from the dry riverbed below.
The old village from the rambla

A house above the old village, for eight and a long way home.

The Indalo

Almería's ancient guardian figure, painted on doorways across Mojácar to keep storms and ill fortune out of the house.

The House

still in the builder’s hands

Eight beds, a pool cut into the hillside, and enough terrace to lose an afternoon on.

The house is being taken back to bones this winter — new plumbing throughout, the electrics chased in behind fresh plaster, the pool basin relined and re-coped. It will be finished before anybody sleeps in it.

The Village

our favourite part

Mojácar stacks white up its own hill, and has done for a very long time.

Lanes too narrow for cars, a square at the top that catches the evening, and the Indalo painted beside doorways all the way up — the same guardian figure this house takes its name from. Sitting above it, you get the village without being in the thick of it.

A proper guide — where to eat, when to go up — to follow

The Coast

still exploring, happily

Almería keeps the emptiest beaches in Spain, and does not advertise them.

The long strand below Mojácar for easy days, quieter coves further south, and the volcanic coast of the Cabo de Gata within reach for the ones worth a drive.
